Wednesday, December 8, 2010 Eleventh Day of Advent

Wednesday, December 8th
Luke 1:31-37 – The Visitation

The Visitation, as this story is often called, changed everything.  The Visitation changed Mary’s life forever – she was given an impossible task, to bear the Son of God in her womb and raise him as a mother.  God broke into her ordinary world and invited her to join in God’s extraordinary plan to redeem the world.  And the Visitation also changed the world forever – the world was given an impossible gift, the promise that God would take on flesh and blood and become King of all the earth.  God broke into the ordinary world of human existence and promised to change the world forever.

How might God be visiting you today, changing your world forever?  In the season of Advent, we long for the second coming of Christ – for then God will complete his renovation of the world, bringing light into all of the world’s darkness, and hope into all of its despair.  But we also long for God’s daily visitation.  We trust that God comes to us daily, that God makes a home within us to save us from the power of sin and make us holy people.

God’s daily visitation in us is our source of joy and hope.  Let us offer joy and hope to one another in this holiday season.  I invite you to visit or call someone today who might be lonely.  You might even remind this person that God visits them in their loneliness even when they don’t sense God’s presence.

Kid Challenge: Have you ever felt lonely?  Think of someone at school who might feel lonely – someone who doesn’t have friends, someone who sits alone, or someone who is made fun of.  God loves that person just as much as He loves you, and God wants us all to know that we are loved.  Your challenge today is to go out of your way to be a friend to that person.  You might sit with him or her at lunch or spend time together during recess.  By being a friend to people who are lonely, we show them that they are special to God.

Advent Blessings,

Laura

This Christmas, give the gift that only you can give,
...give yourself this Christmas!  (Peter Mayer)
