Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19   http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=158297809

The poor and the needy

“This psalm was written as a prayer for the king of Israel. Just as people today want good leaders at the helm of our nations—who will be fair, put down oppressors, lift people out of poverty, and help justice-seekers flourish—the people of Israel prayed for their king to lead them in these ways. We believe that when Jesus showed us what God’s love is like, it included setting injustices aright and restoration of justice, the necessary condition for peace.”

Pray for our leaders today that they might be bold in their defense of the poor, the oppressed and the needy. Setting “injustice aright” is central to our faith yet rarely seems central to our conversations much less our leaders or the agendas we ask them to pursue. What can you give away today as a sign of your commitment to those who not only have less but are who often over-looked and under-respected?
