Monday, December 13, 2010 Sixteenth Day of Advent

An Important Role

As we live into this Third Week of Advent, our focus shifts just a bit from the second coming of Christ, to our remembrance of Christ’s first coming—a babe born in a manger in the town of Bethlehem. Yesterday in worship we heard the story of Mary and Elizabeth (Luke 1:26-55). This week we’ll remember the story of Joseph. There’s much to unpack in the few details Scripture shares about Jesus’ earthly father. Joseph was a man of great faith and few words. We never hear him speak, but we do experience the eternal consequences of his faithful actions.

In a world where supportive roles are often portrayed as less than desirable, Joseph shows the power and importance of listening to and acting upon God’s leading—even when it takes us to a place that might seem a bit out of place. Many probably whispered behind Joseph’s back as they learned of Mary’s pregnancy. How could he continue their engagement?

Jesus often taught that our supportive, servant roles, are the most important. I invite you to look for ways to support others today. How might you help someone else finish a job, accomplish a task or complete an assignment? Sometimes just a kind word recognizing someone’s work and effort can make all the difference. Be aware and be supportive today!

Kid’s Challenge
Look for ways to offer support to your friends and family today. Our actions always speak louder than our words. Whether it’s washing the dishes, helping to clean up a mess, or just being present with someone—show your family and friends that you care by being there for them today!

Advent Blessings.

This Christmas, give the gift that only you can give,
...give yourself this Christmas! (Peter Mayer)
